Honda F20C: 11 Years as the Power Density King! ๐๐ฅ
The engine is the heart of a car, and when it comes to performance vehicles, only a few legendary engines stand out.
For Honda, the Type R red-top engines have always been the epitome of high-performance. But one non-Type R engine deserves equal recognitionโthe F20C, the powerhouse behind the legendary S2000!
๐ For 11 years (1999-2010), the F20C held the title for the highest power output per liter in a production NA engineโ125 HP/L! It wasn't until 2010 that Ferrariโs F136F in the 458 Italia (127 HP/L) finally broke this record.
Letโs dive into what made the F20C such a beast! ๐ฅ
F20C: Hondaโs Masterpiece for the S2000 ๐๐จ
The F20C is a 1,997cc inline-4 engine, engineered specifically for the S2000. Unlike the F-series engines found in older Preludes and Accords, the F20C is an entirely different animal.
๐น Aluminum block design for lightweight performance.
๐น 87mm x 84mm bore & stroke โ short-stroke, high-revving design.
๐น Compression Ratio: 11.1:1 (USDM) / 11.7:1 (JDM) for maximum efficiency.
๐น DOHC VTEC on both intake & exhaust โ ensuring peak performance at high RPMs.
Honda engineers borrowed motorsport technology to make the F20C incredibly durable & high-revving.
Why Did the F20C Rev So High? ๐ 9,000 RPM Madness!
๐ง Honda built the F20C to rev beyond 8,000 RPMโjust like their legendary S500, S600, and S800 sports cars.
To achieve this, they focused on reducing friction and improving balance:
โ Lightweight 153mm connecting rods โ with a 1.8214:1 rod-to-stroke ratio, increasing piston speed.
โ Piston speed: 24.6m/s โ the highest ever in a production engine! ๐ฅ
โ Special fiber-reinforced cylinder sleeves for added strength.
โ Molybdenum-coated piston skirts to reduce friction.
โ Reinforced crankshaft with extra ribbing for high-RPM stability.
In 2004, Honda upgraded the F20C by introducing a lighter 6.4kg flywheel, making the engine rev even faster! ๐จ
VTEC Kicking in โ How the F20C Made 250HP! ๐ฅ
The secret to the F20Cโs power? ๐ VTEC activation at 5,500-6,000 RPM!
๐ก VTEC allowed the F20C to breathe better at high RPMs, maximizing power output.
โ JDM F20C (11.7:1 compression) = 250 HP @ 8,600 RPM
โ USDM F20C (11.1:1 compression) = 240 HP @ 8,300 RPM
Spoon Sportsโ Legendary F20C Builds ๐ง๐ฅ
Tuning legends Spoon Sports pushed the F20C even further, creating Long Block and Short Block upgrades, increasing precision and compression.
โ Stock bore version โ high compression with improved balance (ยฑ2g precision on rods/pistons).
โ 2.2L stroker version (F22C1) โ increased displacement for better low-end torque.
๐ก Spoonโs tuning philosophy: Not just adding power, but refining precision! ๐ฏ
The F22C1 โ Hondaโs Response to the US Market ๐
In 2004, Honda released a long-stroke version of the F20C for North America: the F22C1.
๐น Bore x Stroke: 87mm x 90.7mm (vs. F20Cโs 87mm x 84mm)
๐น Displacement: 2,157cc (vs. F20Cโs 1,997cc)
๐น Peak Power: 240 HP @ 7,800 RPM (lower than F20Cโs 8,600 RPM)
๐น Torque: 220 Nm @ 6,500 RPM (increased from F20Cโs 208 Nm @ 7,500 RPM)
๐ก The tradeoff? More low-end torque but a lower redline (8,200 RPM). JDM AP2 models also got the F22C1, replacing the F20C.
Why the F20C is Still a Legend! ๐ฅ๐
๐ Even today, the F20C remains one of the most advanced naturally aspirated inline-4 engines ever made.
๐ฅ 9,000 RPM redline
๐ฅ 250 HP from just 2.0L
๐ฅ The longest-held power density record (1999-2010)
Honda engineered the F20C with no compromises, creating an engine that still rivals modern performance cars today! ๐๐จ
