How To Use Ratchet Style Mechanism Tie Downs
Tensioning
- Place the long length of webbing over the load and connect the fitting to a solid anchor point.
- Insert the free end of the strap through the slot in the ratchet spindle. Pull until the slack is removed.
- Releasing a little slack, now connect the fixed end strap fitting to the second solid anchor point around and connect back to the tie off loop if provided. Ensure the ratchet handle faces outwards. Make sure there are no twists and that the strap is flat over the load.
- Pull up the slack again and pump the ratchet handle to work the ratchet so there are 2 to 4 layers of webbing around the ratchet spindle until the desired tension is set. Do not allow too many layers of the webbing around the reel as this may jam the ratchet. (Note: Refer to release tension instructions if needing to adjust.)
- Take care not to over-tighten the strap as this could also damage the load.
- Push the handle fully down to lock, check that the ratchet mechanism is locked, check no sharp objects are going to damage the fibre strap. Check that the load is stable under the strap and there will be no vibration, rub or flapping. Use protective sleeves to protect the fibre webbing from edges or rough surfaces.
CHECK TIE DOWNS REGULARLY WHEN IN USE DURING THE JOURNEY.
Releasing Tension
- Pull back the handle to the open position.
- With 1 hand, pull the release lever. The release mechanism pulls approximately 10mm towards the handle.
- Using the free hand, pull the webbing out of the ratchet spindle until all the webbing is removed.
- Let the release mechanism go.
