The Honda Accord CB: The Car That Left a Mark on Sydney

The Honda Accord CB: The Car That Left a Mark on Sydney

📅 Updated: January 19, 2025

During my school years, a teacher once asked us an interesting question: "Is there a car so memorable that people remember its name but not the brand?" At the time, my classmates and I were confused. How could someone remember a car’s name and forget its brand? Surely, such a car must hold extraordinary significance. Surprisingly, the answer was not a supercar or a model from a historic luxury brand. It was just a regular Honda Accord.

Let’s dive into the story of the third-generation Accord (CB chassis)—a car that has etched its name in automotive history.

The Fourth-Generation Accord (CB Chassis): A New Era Begins

Launched in 1989, the fourth-generation Accord marked significant progress in Honda’s design and engineering. While it retained similarities to the previous generation, such as its sedan design and styling cues, it was a larger, more refined car. By 1990, the CB Accord had a presence that matched the first-generation Honda Legend in size.

Honda expanded its offerings with sedan, wagon (known as AeroDeck in certain regions), and coupe versions. However, the hatchback variant from the earlier generation was discontinued.

Why the Accord Became Unforgettable

In markets like Guangdong, China, the Accord became synonymous with success and reliability. People didn’t call it the "Honda Accord"—they simply called it the "Accord." At the time, owning this car signified affluence, and its reputation for durability and comfort ensured that its name stayed in the minds of many.

Innovative Engineering for a Smooth Ride

Honda introduced groundbreaking features with the CB Accord:

  1. F22A Engine Series:

    • Standard in North America, these all-aluminum SOHC engines boasted 16 valves.
    • Shared with the Prelude S, these engines replaced the older F20A engine.
  2. Electrically Controlled Rear Engine Mounts:

    • A hydraulic system reduced noise and vibration at low RPMs.
    • At idle, the hydraulic valve would open to dampen vibrations.
  3. Improved Transmission:

    • The manual transmission featured a hydraulic clutch, enhancing smoothness and responsiveness.

The Wagon (AeroDeck) and Coupe Variants

By 1991, Honda expanded production to include the wagon (AeroDeck) and coupe, which were primarily manufactured in the U.S. The AeroDeck’s design shifted to a true wagon style, making it highly practical, while the coupe was tailored to meet the tastes of the American market.

High-Performance Variants

The CB Accord’s lineup included some standout models:

  1. SE Trim (North America):

    • Leather seats, upgraded audio systems, and premium interior finishes.
    • Powered by the F22A6 engine, offering 140 horsepower thanks to improved camshaft and intake manifold designs.
  2. Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Models:

    • The high-performance Si trim featured a DOHC F20A engine producing 150 horsepower, available exclusively in Japan.

Notable Features of the CB Accord

  • Innovative Intake Design (IAB System):

    • Variable intake technology adjusted airflow to optimize torque at low RPMs and horsepower at higher RPMs.
  • Safety Enhancements:

    • Electric seat belts and ABS brakes became standard on some trims after the 1991 facelift.
  • Anniversary Editions:

    • In 1992, Honda celebrated 10 years of Accord production with a special edition featuring ABS, four-wheel disc brakes, and unique alloy wheels.

Legacy of the Fourth-Generation Accord

The CB Accord was officially discontinued in 1993, but not before leaving an indelible mark on global automotive history. Its innovative features, elegant design, and reputation for reliability cemented its place as a car beloved by many, including in Sydney, where it became a household name.

In its final years, Honda released the Ascot Innova, a luxury hardtop variant that shared the CB’s platform but offered a more modern design.
