Since many car manufacturers have been forced to adopt small-displacement turbocharged engines due to strict environmental regulations, the global automotive industry has entered a new turbocharged era. In this era, it's a mixed bag of emotions—some lament the loss of naturally aspirated engines as they watch one iconic model after another get replaced. Conversely, enthusiasts of raw power rejoice as turbocharging makes both base engine power and power upgrades significantly easier. For example, take the 10th-generation Civic, powered by the small-displacement L15 turbocharged engine. Despite its modest 1.5L capacity, it delivers an impressive stock 170 horsepower. A simple ECU remap can push it beyond the 200hp mark, which is undeniably enticing for performance enthusiasts. 💪
Speaking of Civics, the FK7 is particularly popular because it shares the FK8 Type R’s exterior design. Compared to the sedan FC1, this hatchback version attracts a legion of Type R fans. However, mimicking the Type R isn’t just about looks. While the FK7 may not match the Type R in handling, its power potential is worth exploring. But how should one proceed? A common solution is to remap the ECU to increase boost pressure for more horsepower. While effective, this approach isn’t without complications. Can the turbo handle the added strain? Are supporting modifications necessary to maximize its potential? And what about the turbo's lifespan under higher pressure?
🌐 Turbo Upgrades from SPOON 🌐
SPOON’s comprehensive solution is straightforward: replace the turbo. Through research, SPOON found that while the stock turbo can deliver more power, it introduces issues. The stock turbo is small and quickly hits its pressure limits when boost is increased. Overworking it raises exhaust temperatures, compromising both turbo longevity and engine thermal management. With the L15C turbo located directly below the intake, high exhaust temperatures can also raise intake air temps, reducing engine efficiency. For true power gains, a turbo upgrade is the best path.
SPOON offers a larger turbo with the same housing as the OEM one but with an enlarged chamber. Manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), it features a larger compressor and turbine, more blades on the turbine side, and optimized blade angles. This design enhances both responsiveness and efficiency. Installed on SPOON’s FK7 demo car and paired with a Hondata FlashPro tune, this turbo delivers up to 274hp and 42.17kgm torque. SPOON’s tests confirmed that the L15C’s injectors can handle the upgraded turbo, so no injector replacement is needed. Plus, the design allows direct bolt-on installation.
💨 Maximizing the Turbo’s Potential 💨
Upgrading the turbo isn’t enough on its own. Increased airflow demands a high-flow intake system to prevent restrictions, as the stock air filter can’t meet the turbo’s needs. Similarly, the exhaust system must be upgraded to avoid backpressure issues, ensuring smooth outflow of exhaust gases and maximizing power. SPOON offers a high-flow air filter for the FK7, designed to retain low-end torque while supporting improved airflow at higher RPMs.
In the exhaust department, SPOON’s N1 full exhaust system features a 60mm diameter and 304 stainless steel construction. Its enlarged piping reduces resistance for better high-RPM performance. A center-mounted muffler design ensures it’s both functional and aesthetically aligned with the FK7’s bodywork. Certified under Japan’s JQR standards, the exhaust produces 94dB at idle and 74dB during operation.
