🔰 Introduction
Honda's engines are categorized into four main types: automotive, motorcycle, commercial, and aircraft engines. This article focuses on Honda's automotive engine series. Honda's engine classification primarily depends on the number of cylinders. Within each type, engines are denoted by a letter and two numbers indicating displacement, followed by a letter representing the version, such as the L15B7 VTC turbo engine in the tenth-generation Civic.

🔹 The Birth of Honda’s E-Series
Honda's three-cylinder E-series engine was first introduced in 1988, with three distinct generations: E05A, E07A, and later versions like E07Z and S07A. These engines were designed for Japanese Kei cars and offered in different displacements and valve configurations.

🛠 First Generation (E05A and E07A)

E05A: 547cc, 62.5x59.5mm bore and stroke, 12-valve design with carbureted and PGM-Fi versions, producing 35 HP (carbureted) and 43 HP (fuel-injected).
E07A: 656cc, capable of 63 HP at 8100 RPM, famously powering the Honda Beat (PP1), often called the "mini NSX."

🚘 Second Generation (E07Z)
Released in 1998, the E07Z improved air-fuel ratio and ignition control and added a turbocharged model. Despite the 64 HP limit for Kei cars, the turbo version reached 93 Nm of torque, enhancing driving pleasure and accommodating increased vehicle weight.

🔧 Rare Model - ECA1
The ECA1, found in the 2000 Insight (ZE1), was a unique 995cc three-cylinder engine with VTEC technology, producing 67 HP and 92 Nm of torque.

🌟 S07A and S07B Series
Introduced in 2011, the S07A/B series brought major upgrades and became the core of Honda’s post-2000 three-cylinder engines. The S07B included DOHC i-VTEC for naturally aspirated versions and had a high compression ratio of 12:1.

🚗 Popular Models
The N-series Kei cars like N Box, N One, and N WGN featured these engines, with Earth Dreams technology incorporated from 2014 onwards. The sporty S660 (JW5), a successor to the Beat, used the turbocharged S07A engine.

💭 Conclusion
This deep dive into the E05A, E07A, E07Z, and S07A/B provides an understanding of Honda's history with three-cylinder engines. Stay tuned for the next part, covering Honda's P-series engines, which continue the legacy with more advanced 660cc+ models.
