Introduction: Honda’s engines fall into four main categories: automotive, motorcycle, commercial power, and aviation engines. In this article, we’re focusing exclusively on Honda’s automotive engines. Honda engines are primarily classified by cylinder count, followed by a unique naming format — a letter for the series, two digits for displacement, and another letter for model version. For example, the L15B7 VTC turbo engine found in the tenth-gen Civic: "L" represents the four-cylinder L series, "15" indicates 1.5L displacement, "B" designates the sub-series, and "7" marks the version number. 🚗💨

Mechanical Highlights of the P Series 🔧

The P07A engine series evolved with notable mechanical upgrades, most significantly an increase in displacement from 656cc to 658cc (71.0×55.4mm). The P series introduced i-DSI SOHC valve systems, with two valves per cylinder for intake and exhaust.

Turbocharged Version:
Compression Ratio: 8.5:1
Max Horsepower: 64 HP @ 6000 RPM
Max Torque: 93 Nm @ 4000 RPM 💥
Naturally Aspirated Version:
Compression Ratio: 11.2:1
Max Horsepower: 52 HP @ 7100 RPM
Max Torque: 60 Nm @ 4000 RPM
Initially, the Kei-Car P07A engine series was largely phased out, replaced by the S07A. However, in a surprising twist, Honda reintroduced it in 2015 with a larger displacement P10A, proving that the P series still had life as an efficient gasoline engine. This unexpected return truly gave the P series a “rollercoaster” story! 🎢

The Evolution of P07A 🚗🔄

Launched in September 2003, the P07A engine powered the fourth-gen Honda Life (JC1), available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. The Life series, though discontinued in 2014, held a significant place in Honda’s lineup, much like today’s Fit.

As part of Honda's innovation, the P series became a pioneer among low-vibration three-cylinder engines, tailored for fuel efficiency. In September 2015, Honda released the P10A, which initially powered European Civics. By 2017, the P10A2 engine, featuring VTEC Turbo, was introduced in the Civic FK6 and the Chinese-market 1.0T 180 version, with a displacement of 988cc (73.0×78.7mm). With DOHC, four valves per cylinder, and Earth Dreams direct injection, this engine hit 130 HP @ 5500 RPM and 200 Nm @ 2250 RPM, marking a significant leap in performance. 💪⚙️

Future of the P Series 🚀🔋

The P series could play a key role in Honda’s future, given the global shift toward smaller, turbocharged engines. Besides the P10A-equipped Civics in Europe and China (seen in the FK4), the second-gen Honda Crider, launched in September 2018, also features the P10A3 engine. Although three-cylinder engines are less popular in markets outside Japan, Honda's fourth-gen Fit (GR) and the potential export version of the S660 (S1000) may adopt this engine, suggesting that the P10A could become a cornerstone in Honda's post-gasoline strategy. 🛢️

For now, this glimpse into Honda's vast engine lineage is a fascinating look at the innovation and history of Honda’s three-cylinder lineup. 🚙🔍
