The Legacy of the First-Generation NSX

The first-generation Honda NSX (NA1), launched in 1990, left an indelible mark on automotive history. With later upgrades, including the C32B engine in the NA2 and a mid-cycle refresh, production officially ended in 2005. While the second-generation NC1 NSX debuted in 2016, the NA1’s legacy remains deeply cherished.

Between these two models, there was a significant gap in Honda’s lineup. During this period, despite Honda’s efforts and prototypes, the global financial crisis of 2008 forced the second-generation NSX project to be shelved temporarily, leaving the NSX legacy in limbo, like a lonely elder with no successor.

The Spark That Kept the NSX Alive: The NSX MUGEN RR

The NSX was more than just a flagship sports car for Honda—it symbolized their technological prowess and commitment to performance. While some argue the HSV-010 carried the NSX’s torch, it was ultimately a race car tied more to the NSX GT than the road-going legacy.

In contrast, the NSX MUGEN RR Concept, crafted by MUGEN in 2009, stands as the true embodiment of the NSX’s evolution. Although a concept, it tested whether a mid-mounted longitudinal engine layout could be viable for street use.

Pushing Performance: Aerodynamics and Design

The MUGEN RR featured an aggressive wide-body aerodynamic kit designed not for aesthetics but for stability at high speeds. Made entirely from lightweight carbon fiber, the kit included:

  • Front Aerodynamics: Redirected airflow for smoother distribution to critical areas like brakes and sides.
  • Top-Mounted Air Intake: Borrowed from SUPER GT’s NSX GT for better cooling and airflow.
  • Rear GT Wing and Diffuser: Reduced underbody turbulence, increased downforce, and improved high-speed handling.

A Radical Chassis and Engine Layout

The NSX MUGEN RR retained the iconic 3.2L C32B engine, but its layout was changed from transverse to longitudinal. This shift optimized weight distribution and vehicle balance, crucial for stability and handling.

This transformation wasn’t simple—it required substantial modifications to the chassis, which evolved into a space-frame structure, departing from the aluminum monocoque of the original NSX.

A Concept with a Purpose

While some dismiss the MUGEN RR as a non-functional concept, it represents Honda’s dedication to constant evolution. From its carbon fiber aerodynamics to its chassis redesign, every element reflects Honda’s relentless pursuit of performance improvements.

Key Features of the NSX MUGEN RR Concept:

  • Aerodynamic Mastery: Lightweight carbon fiber wide-body kit.
  • Longitudinal Engine Layout: Improved weight distribution and handling.
  • SUPER GT Innovations: Inspired top-mounted air intake and GT wing.
  • Radical Chassis Design: Space-frame structure for enhanced rigidity.
