When talking about the high-performance versions of the Civic, many car enthusiasts immediately think of the Type R. However, besides the Type R, the Civic also has another high-performance version, the Si. Have you ever wondered why Honda decided to launch two different high-performance versions? Or have you ever thought about what exactly the Si is? And what kind of cars have the Civic Si models been throughout the generations? Let’s discuss the origin of the Si name and its models.

The name "Si" is actually an abbreviation for "Sport Injected," representing one of the high-performance versions of the Civic. This version first appeared in the third-generation Civic and was the highest-performance version sold by Honda in the Japanese and North American markets at the time. By the sixth and seventh generations, Canada and other markets introduced the SiR model, which was equivalent to the EX model in the North American market. Until 2017, the Si was the highest-performance version of the Civic in North America. After 2017, the left-hand drive Type R was introduced, taking over as the highest-performance Civic in North America. However, despite this, the Si and Type R have fundamental differences. The Type R focuses more on performance, leading to the reduction of comfort and luxury features. On the other hand, the Si emphasizes comfort, so it comes with features like a sunroof and additional speakers in the audio system.

3rd Civic CRX Si

In November 1984, the Si model was first introduced, named Civic CRX Si, primarily available as a hatchback model. The Si differed from the standard version by having a slightly raised hood to accommodate a higher DOHC engine. A small number of four-door versions were produced in Japan, but they were extremely rare. The engine was called ZC1 in the Japanese domestic market and D16A1 in Europe, delivering 120 horsepower, which was quite powerful at the time. However, the North American market did not have it initially. The CRX Si appeared in North America in 1985, first equipped with an EW3 SOHC engine with a displacement of only 1.5L and a power output of just 91 horsepower. In 1986, the Si model expanded to include a Hatchback version, sharing the same powertrain as the CRX Si but with four seats. The hatchback Si also introduced a removable glass sunroof, a five-speed manual transmission, and a roof spoiler.

4th Civic Si EF

Initially, the fourth-generation Civic Si was not available as a Hatchback in the U.S.; only the CRX Si was offered. It wasn't until 1989 that the Hatchback Si version was introduced. The Hatchback Si was equipped with a D16A6 engine, a SOHC fuel-injected engine producing 108 horsepower. Although the power was not particularly high, the car was lightweight at only 1,037 kg, allowing it to achieve a 0-100 km/h time of just 8.1 seconds. Compared to the previous generation, the biggest change in the Si was in the suspension system, as this generation of the Civic began using a four-wheel double-wishbone suspension. The U.S.-spec Si and the JDM Si had different engines, with JDM models featuring more powerful B-series engines, whereas the U.S. models only had D-series engines. This led to the popularity of engine swaps in the U.S., replacing D-series engines with B-series ones. In addition to the suspension upgrades, the fourth-generation Si also had some interior and exterior changes, such as the introduction of covered 14-inch wheels and deeper sports seats.
