Ariel Atom is one of those unique beasts. It’s made by Ariel Moto, a historic British company 🇬🇧.
Its roots trace all the way back to 1870, though at the time they weren’t building cars—but bicycles 🚴 with giant 48-inch front wheels!
Strictly speaking, Ariel isn’t your typical car manufacturer 🏭.
From bicycles, to motorcycles 🏍️, to cars—it’s always been more like a creative workshop 🛠️.
The Atom project began in 1996, originally a student project from Coventry University 🇬🇧.
It was created by design student Niki Smart, later evolving into the “LSC” (Lightweight Sports Car) project.
Development officially started in 1996, receiving investments and support from industry leaders like TWR 💼.
It became the Ariel Atom thanks to Simon Saunders, a senior lecturer at the university, who also served as project financial advisor and design critic 🎓.
The Atom made its debut at the British Motor Show in October 1996 in Birmingham 📍.

Now, you might wonder, what does any of this have to do with Honda? 🤔
Well, quite a lot.
Honda is famous for their red-top high-performance engines 🔴.
Small makers like Ariel don’t develop their own powertrains,
so when building a street-legal race car, Honda becomes a natural choice ❤️.
Several Atom versions use Honda engines:
– The 2.0L base version uses the K20Z4 engine from the FN2 Civic Type R.
– There’s also a 310 hp version of the K20Z4 with a supercharger 🌪️.
– Some versions use the K24Z7, naturally aspirated and turbocharged, producing 230 hp and 365 hp respectively 🔄.
– The newest versions even adopt the K20C1 engine from the FK2 and FK8 Civic Type R.
So yes—Ariel Atom and Honda go way back 🤝.
