Mugen’s Underrated Gem: The MUGEN NSX Prototype

When you think of Mugen, what comes to mind? High-performance tuning, striking designs, and iconic cars like the Civic Mugen RR, right? But have you ever noticed that Mugen never officially tuned the first-gen NSX? While there’s the NSX MUGEN RR, that car was more of a completely rebuilt project than a traditional tune-up. The real “Mugen” NSX story began much earlier—in 1992—with the MUGEN NSX Prototype.

Unveiling the Prototype

🛠️ Debuted at the 1992 Tokyo Auto Show, the MUGEN NSX Prototype was based on Honda’s final pre-production NSX version. While it never reached mass production, this car was a true masterpiece of engineering and balance, showing Mugen’s commitment to enhancing NSX performance without compromising its DNA.

Upgrades That Set New Standards

1️⃣ Suspension Innovations:

  • Equipped with Mugen’s MVSC adjustable suspension system, allowing three driving modes from the cockpit.
  • Strengthened anti-roll bars and suspension bushings improved cornering performance and vehicle stability.

2️⃣ Enhanced Grip and Stability:

  • New wheels and tires: Front upgraded to 16x8.5, rear to 17x9.5, improving overall grip.
  • Reinforced LSD system boosted handling in tight corners.

3️⃣ Refined Powertrain:

  • The 3.0L V6 C30A engine saw a modest upgrade, with power increased from 270bhp to 320bhp.
  • Upgrades included stronger valve springs, increased compression ratio (10.5:1), and a re-tuned ECU for optimized performance.

4️⃣ Lightweight Design:

  • Almost the entire body, except for the roof, doors, and mirrors, was replaced with carbon fiber, significantly reducing weight.
  • Aerodynamic improvements included larger front intakes, heat extraction vents, and reduced underbody turbulence.

A True Mugen Vision

This car wasn’t just about power or aesthetics—it was about balance and refinement. From the upgraded suspension to the carefully calibrated engine, Mugen’s approach prioritized control and driving pleasure over raw speed, much like the philosophy behind the later FD2 Mugen RR.

What Could Have Been

Unfortunately, the MUGEN NSX Prototype never saw mass production, leaving fans to wonder how quickly it would have sold out had it hit the market. But its legacy lives on in every Mugen creation, inspiring enthusiasts and setting benchmarks for tuning excellence.
